We did a story earlier called: How Do You Keep Your Employees from Leaving?

In that story we talked about the restlessness of employees since the last financial downturn and the desire of many to move on to new jobs. We talked a bit about what it takes to keep your employees – especially your good ones. It is not, as some would believe, just a single element but an entire value proposition that is needed.

We wrote about the importance of a strong employee value proposition in attracting and retaining employees. {See Growing the Employee Value Proposition} We talked about 5 key elements:
(1) The Work
(2) Compensation
(3) Benefits
(4) Association
(5) Career
Getting these right goes a long way in achieving retention and attracting talent. But there is more to the equation. Here are some other must-haves in order to make all of this work. I call this the "environment for success":

Our first piece covered the employee value proposition; {See Growing The Employee Value Proposition}. This covered things you must do to build and sustain the value proposition.

The second dealt with a host of other factors that must also be present; {See Employee Value Proposition, Part II}. This dealt with how you feel about and how you treat your employees.

Now we will wrap it up with other things that must be present for all of this to work successfully.
(1) Talent Management - Do you have a program that actively seeks out gaps in skills that either leads to filling those gaps with critical hires or develops internal talent to fill the gap? If you don't, your employee will readily see that the gaps exist but you are doing nothing about it. Not a good environment. What are you doing to grow your workforce as a whole? If you specialize in a particular market, how are you keeping your people crisp, undated and sharp in the latest skill sets and information? If you are moving into new markets, how have you positioned your workforce to effectively "play" in that market?
